DEVELOPMENT OF NEW SPECIALTIES

  • STEREOTACTIC RADIOSURGERY

    Started the first Stereotactic radiosurgery Unit in South Asia Carried out the first Stereotactic Radiotherapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery procedure on May 27 and May 30 1995 at the Apollo SpecialityHospitals, Chennai. First Neurosurgeon from South Asia to become a Member of the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society 1996. Have one of the largest experience in this subspecialty in South Asia. Have presented number of papers nationally and internationally in this area. Responsible for helping set up several new radiosurgery units and training neurosurgeons.

    First neurosurgeon from South Asia to be formally trained in Robotic radiosurgery and the first from this region to become a member of the CyberKnife Societyin2008.

    TELEMEDICINE

    Nationally and internationally recognized as one of the pioneers who played a major role in the growth and development of Clinical Telemedicine in India – formally commissioned by Bill Clinton on March 24th 2000 at Aragonda (have given invited lectures in India, invited lectures overseas with quoted publications ).   • TELEMEDICINE IN ARMED FORCES OF INDIA

    Instrumental in initiating and setting up the first Telemedicine units in the armed forces of India in the ATNKK area with the help of the then GOC Major.Genl. Anoop Jamwal. Trained armed forces service officers in 20 different units on the use of Telemedicine. Followed this up by helping setup Telemedicine units in the central command again with the assistance of Gen. Anoop Jamwal. Organised a course in Telemedicine for Senior Officers of the central command. Subsequently advised Lt. Gen. Anoop Jamwal, when he became Adjutant Genl. of the Indian army.

    a. Have been a relentless campaigner, for the last 39 years to make Helmets mandatory in Tamil Nadu. Measures have included filing a PIL and appearing before the Madras High court and getting a Government Order passed to enforce helmet use.
